SOC Autumn Meeting
The 2024 Autumn Meeting of the SOC was held at the Apex City Quay Hotel in Dundee on the 20th September, hosted by NHS Fife.
During the opening free papers session we heard from a range of speakers on topics including pathways for suspected GCA, a feasibility study on using no drops after cataract surgery and cases of lipaemia retinalis.
After a break for refreshments, delegates then welcomed Dr Aeesha Malik who discussed Integrating Eye Health into Child Health Programmes; William J Williams who presented on the Arclight Project and Jamie Bankhead who spoke on the History of Computer Games in Dundee.
Before lunch the travel award for 2024 was presented to Alastair Simpson (first prize) and James Hazelwood (second prize).
Session three began, after a hearty lunch, with a series of sessions on the subject of Education in Ophthalmology. We heard from Melanie Corbett on Online Education, Dr John Ellis on Vision 2023 Education links in Indonesia, Fiston Kitema who provided a Rwandan perspective on Inter-professional education in eye care and Helen St Clair-Tracey on public resources for cerebral visual impairment.
After a further break for refreshments and an opportunity to browse the posters and trade exhibition, the SOC paper and poster prizes were awarded. The best paper prize was awarded to Kraig Jamieson who spoke on "No Drops after Cataract Surgery: A Patient Centred Approach - Feasibility Study". Best poster prize went to Rana Khalil whose poster was entitled "Are Acrylic IOLs Safe to use in Patients with Reported Methyl Methacrylate Allergy?". Undergraduate prizes went to Vanessa Tjen ("An Audit of Corneoscleral Rim Culture from Donor Transplant Tissue for Patients Undergoing Corneal Transplantation Surgery) and Maria Bantounou ("Real-World Experience of Intravitreal Faricimab Injection in Previously Treated Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration Eyes").
After a presentation from Dr Peter Wilson on Simulation Training in Scottish Ophthalmology the meeting closed with another edition of the Great Debate, this time on the subject: “This house believes Scotland should select trainees for Scotland versus national selection on training”. For the motion was Dr Andrew Pyott and against was represented by Ms Melanie Corbett.
It was another fantastic meeting. The SOC council look forward to inviting everyone back in February 2025 at the Stirling Court Hotel, for the Spring meeting to be hosted by NHS Forth Valley.
